About the Striders

We are women of all ages from the Shuswap area who join together to engage in activities for physical health and an appreciation of nature. Our members are from their early teens to their 80’s! We support and encourage a friendly, non-competitive atmosphere, and physical fitness at an individual pace.

The Striders is well-organized and members hold positions such as Coordinator, Assistant Coordinator, Secretary/Treasurer and Social Coordinator. Volunteers from the membership take the lead in organizing the various events and activities. For example, our Hiking Coordinator organizes weekly hikes from the Spring to the Fall. She ensures information is provided on each hike that includes its difficulty, terrain, directions to the hike, the time it will take to do, etc. A headcount is done prior to the hike and there is always someone in the lead and at the back of each group to ensure everyone is doing OK and that no one is ever left behind at any part of the hike. She makes sure everyone is accounted for at the end.

Our activities are both physical and social. To encourage as many as possible to participate, a number of our activities are divided into different levels. For example, on most of our hikes the group that meets is broken into three levels – fast, medium and not-so-fast. We also hold potluck dinners, an Annual General Meeting, a Friends & Family Picnic, a Christmas Luncheon and there is a Breakfast Club that meets once a month at local restaurants.

Our main focus is on being an outdoors group; however, we do support local initiatives:

  • Striders Memorial Walk – May
  • Kelowna Fresh Air Experience Walk/Run – June
  • Bike for Your Life Century Ride – September
  • Salmon Arm Fall Fair Parade – September

We try to have information sessions held throughout the year to improve our skills and awareness. Some sessions have been:

  • Running Clinics
  • Cross Country Ski Techniques
  • First Aid Clinic
  • Bear Aware & Safe Hiking
  • Bicycle Maintenance
  • Nutrition
  • Brain Gym

  • Wednesday Walkers – All year, Wednesdays
  • Early Bird Walkers & Thursday Walkers – 2 Groups, All year, Thursdays
  • Fido Fridays – All year , Fridays (members with dogs)
  • Breakfast Club – All year, once a month, first Thursday
  • Hiking - April to October, Mondays
  • Cycling – May to October, Wednesdays
  • Evening Walkers/Joggers – April to June (none in July/Aug) and again in September, Wednesdays
  • Snowshoeing - January to March, Mondays
  • Cross-Country Skiing – winter months based on snow conditions, Thursdays
  • Potluck Dinners (2 per year) and Christmas Luncheon
  • Friends & Family Picnic
